Nutrition Tips

Health for the Holidays:

Studies over the past several years have shown holiday weight gain between Thanksgiving and Christmas ranges from one to five pounds for the average American. Factor in the time between Halloween and New Years, and unwanted pounds can increase even further. While a small weight gain is usually not a concern, problems arise when most people do not shed these pounds over the upcoming year. Within as little as 3-5 years, a significant weight gain can occur resulting in an increased risk for developing diabetes, heart disease, or other health problems.

So, how do we help ourselves and loved ones stay healthy over the holidays? One way is to attend our FREE nutrition seminar on December 16th at 5:00 pm. We'll be discussing tips to help prevent holiday weight gain and ways to keep your body healthy during the holiday season. Another way is through your gift giving. Instead of baskets of cookies and chocolates, be creative and consider the following health-focused gifts for friends and family:
  • Homemade gift baskets. Include an assortment of teas (high in antioxidants), walnuts & almonds (good source of fiber, protein and heart-healthy fats), bite-size dark chocolates (at least 70% cocoa for the most antioxidants), and sugar-free gum. A recent study shows chewing gum may help with weight management, and it may also help manage food cravings.
  • Pedometer. Using one can help motivate people to stay active and set small goals to gradually reach the recommended 10,000 steps per day. You can purchase pedometers and even track your steps online through America on the Move.
  • Herb growing kit and/or collection of spices. Replace salt with fresh herbs and dried spices in any recipe to make your meals more flavorful. There is also evidence that using a variety of spices on a regular basis can help decrease inflammation in our bodies.
  • So Easy: Luscious, Healthy Recipes for Every Meal of the Week. This cookbook is great for chefs at any level and is written by Ellie Krieger, a registered dietitian. Ellie is also an author and host of the Food Network show, Healthy Appetite.
  • Exotic fruit basket. Put a spin on the traditional fruit basket by making your own out of a collection of less common fruits such as kiwis, persimmons, starfruit, and pomegranates. For a healthy snack all year round, another idea is a Fruit of the Month gift (visit Harry & David for ideas).
  • Individual visits with a registered dietitian, personal trainer and/or a gym membership. Many offices and gyms offer holiday gift certificates, including South Beach Fitness (ask at the front desk for details). We are also starting an 8-week weight management program in January which can be purchased in advance for a holiday gift.

Nutrition Tips

Help Increase Awareness:

American Diabetes Month, November 2009

Data reports published in 2007, estimated that 23.6 million people in the U.S. had diabetes but as many as 5.7 million people had not yet been diagnosed with the disease. For this reason, it is crucial to visit your doctor for routine physical exams and to know the symptoms and risk factors for developing diabetes. For this information and more, visit the American Diabetes Association website at: www.diabetes.org or attend our FREE seminar on November 20th at 4:30 pm.

As a dietitian, I enjoy educating people on lifestyle changes that can help prevent and manage diabetes. People often do not understand the profound benefits a balanced diet and regular exercise can have on controlling blood sugar levels. I teach portion control and carbohydrate counting to help people with diabetes realize they can still enjoy nearly all foods in moderation. Here are five simple guidelines to follow for overall health and diabetes management and prevention:
  • Do not eliminate carbohydrates completely. Instead, choose grain products and carbohydrate foods wisely -- watch portion sizes and select whole grain foods that are high in fiber.
  • Stay active and achieve a healthy weight. Being overweight or obese can significantly increase your risk for developing Type 2 diabetes. Losing just 5-10% of your starting body weight can improve blood sugar levels and decrease your risk for many diseases.
  • Balance your meals with a lean protein source and lots of non-starchy veggies. The more colorful your plate, the better!
  • Stay hydrated. Most of us think we are hungry when really we are just thirsty, so be sure to drink water throughout the day.
  • Eat at regular intervals. Small meals and snacks every 3-5 hours help to regulate blood sugar levels and maintain energy throughout the day.
Remember, calorie and carbohydrate needs can vary greatly between individuals and throughout your lifetime. Consider meeting with a Registered Dietitian and/or Certified Diabetes Educator for more help with specific meal planning, label reading and carbohydrate goals for your meals and snacks.

Are you following the Guidelines?

If you've been lax about your exercise routine and aren't sure what you should be doing?  New recommendations give adults and kids specifics on what they can do to reap important health benefits.

Adults need a minimum of 2 1/2 hours of moderate exercise per week, or one hour and 15 minutes of vigorous activity. And kids should get an hour of activity per day, according to the Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans.

Those are the numbers the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services came up with after a two-year process that included having a 13-member advisory committee review scientific research on the effects of physical activity and health.

Stress Increases Weight Gain

Stress Increases Weight Gain

The current economic situation has left many people with increased mental and emotional stress. Now more than ever, going to the gym has never been so important.  In fact, a new study conducted by a group of researchers from Harvard Medical School shows that increased stress from financial problems can lead to weight gain. So while financial times may be unpredictable, there is one thing that you can reply on: exercising relieves stress and helps you lose weight when you need it the most.

Improving Your Core

Optimal core function is critical for the attainment of most fitness goals and for improved performance of any sports specific movements. There is no need for specialized equipment such as abdominal rollers or balance tools such as wobble boards or stability disks, in order to train the core muscles. Only proper breathing and muscle activation techniques are needed to integrate core development into any exercise movement. Remember, proper exercise selection and progression is the key to developing a stronger more functional core.

Imrove Your Personality!

According to the National Association on Mental Health, people who exercise are less likely to become stressed, anxious, or depressed. There is also a host of research that indicates that the endorphins released during exercise boost mood. However, until now, very little was known about personality traits associated with high physical activity and longevity. Researchers from the National Institute on Aging recently conducted a study to determine what factors influence longevity, and found significant results.

Beginning in 1958 until 2006, researchers followed 2359 participants and assessed their level of physical activity and their personality traits. Over nearly 50 years, 943 people, or 40% of the sample, died. Analysis enabled researchers to examine the link between longevity and certain personality traits. Researchers concluded that those who lived longer had a few things in common. They were all highly physically active and were more likely to score highly on measures of conscientiousness and emotional stability than their counterparts who died earlier.

Find Your Balance

Increasing one's stabilization and balance abilities has long been recognized as a valuable component of an athlete's training program and is often a critical element for success in their specific sport.
Whether your goals are increased balance, improved core strength, or simply looking and feeling better, don't rely on the latest fitness tool or the most popular trends. Rather, put your trust in a Professional Trainer who is consistently involved in research and continuing education for providing you with direction for periodic redesign and instruction of your exercise program.

This Week in the Fitness Industry

This Week in Fitness

Tipping Point
President Barack Obama addressed Congress with details of his plan this week and accused his opponents of using scare tactics to gain supporters. As the two sides debate over politics, let's hope they don't lose sight of what's really important, the health of American people. Any health care reform needs to include incentives for exercise, a healthy diet, and smoking cessation.

Exercise, It Does a Body Good
This isn't exactly news, but exercise is good for you. There is an ever-expanding list of the health benefits of exercise and it seems like there are one or two more benefits revealed weekly. Well, this week we've got a couple of interesting ones for you.

Reduce Stress?

"The American Institute of Stress characterizes stress as "America's #1 health problem" and associates it with a host of diseases. Practices such as yoga have been used worldwide for thousands of years to increase relaxation and manage stress. A recent study conducted at Massachusetts General Hospital sheds some light on how stress-reducing activities can actually help fight disease. These activities trigger what is known as the relaxation response, which is characterized by decreased oxygen consumption and reduced psychological distress."

Trouble Sleeping?

Having trouble sleeping? Give aerobics a try!
According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 64 million Americans suffer from insomnia. While there are varying types of insomnia and a myriad of causes, all insomniacs suffer from the same persistent inability to fall asleep. Treatment of this condition can include medication, therapy, relaxation exercises, and, according to a new study, aerobic exercise.

Researchers in Brazil recently studied a group of 28 women and 8 men suffering from chronic insomnia. Participants were divided into four groups: moderate aerobic exercise, heavy aerobic exercise, strength training, and a control group. The results indicated that the moderate aerobic exercise group saw the greatest improvement, with a 54 percent decrease in sleep onset latency, 36 percent decrease in awake time, an increase in total sleep time and sleep efficiency by 21 percent and 18 percent, respectively and a 7 percent decrease in anxiety.

Pilates for Tennis Players

Benefits of Pilates for Tennis

South Beach Fitness proudly offers the Peak Pilates method of Pilates training...

For those of you who play tennis, it is no secret that tennis requires agility, stamina, and endurance. Pilates improves your body’s balance for quick reaction to directional changes, improves power of your stroke by increasing the strength of your core (powerhouse), improves muscular control, increases upper and lower body strength, and increases overall flexibility. Furthermore, it produces higher levels of concentration and strengthens and balances the body to prevent injury. Let’s take a closer look at these two benefits. Pilates Improves Concentration. Just like tennis, Pilates requires that you concentrate for a period of time. Pilates sessions are usually 50 to 55 minutes, which require you to concentrate on how to execute a specific movement. You are focusing on what is moving, which muscles you are using, and the quality of the movement. This obviously, requires concentration and a connection between the mind and the body. This in turn, will increase your levels of mental concentration on the court. Pilates Prevents Injury. Tennis players often develop muscular imbalances between their dominant and non-dominant side. A well-designed Pilates program will help the body attain muscular balance both posterior / anterior and also bilaterally. The following are some examples of exercises to target each of these areas.
Shoulders
: In order to address the anterior and posterior balances of the shoulder, it is important to keep the external rotators strong. This will increase the power behind the forehand and backhand strokes. Time to hit the courts,Sonia Rodriguez, Peak Pilates Master Trainer

Please read below to learn how Pilates can complement your current exercise program.
Joseph Pilates
Joseph Pilates was sickly as a child and suffered from asthma, rickets and rheumatic fever. As a result, he dedicated his entire life to becoming physically stronger. He began studying body-building and gymnastics and by the age of 14 was fit enough to pose for anatomical charts. He eventually developed his own method of exercise that we know today as ‘Pilates’.

In 1912 Joseph Pilates moved to England where he worked as a self-defense instructor at Scotland Yard. When World War I began, Joe was interned as an "enemy alien" with other German nationals. During his internment, Joe refined his ideas and trained other internees in his system of exercise. In order to enable bedridden patients to exercise against resistance, he attached springs to hospital beds. This would later inspire the designs of his equipment. During his voyage overseas he met Clara, whom he later married. Joe and Clara opened a fitness studio in New York, sharing an address with the New York City Ballet. By the early 1960s, Joe and Clara were training many New York dancers including George Balanchine. Until his death in 1967, he trained numerous students, several of which opened their own schools.

What is Pilates?
Pilates is a system of mind-body exercise evolved from the principles of Joseph Pilates. By prioritizing core strength and working the extremities at length, it dramatically transforms the way your body looks, feels, and performs. It builds strong muscles without excess bulk and creates a sleek, toned figure with slender thighs and a flat abdomen.

Pilates teaches body awareness, good posture and graceful movement, while improving flexibility and agility. It often helps to alleviate back pain. Developed from rehabilitation techniques, Pilates is a safe, sensible exercise system that is appropriate for people of all ages and physical conditions. Pilates will help you look and feel your very best.

How Can Pilates Help You?
Pilates yields a long list of benefits. Strength and flexibility, particularly of the abdomen and back muscles, are key components in a Pilates program. Posture, balance, and core strength are all significantly increased. Increased lung capacity and circulation through deep, healthy breathing is a primary focus. Bone density and joint health improve, and many experience positive body awareness for the first time.

Pilates elongates and strengthens, improving muscle elasticity and joint mobility and preventing against injuries and other aches and pains. Pilates exercises train several muscle groups at once in smooth, continuous movements. By developing proper technique, you can actually re-train your body to move in safer, more efficient patterns of motion.
