Exercise Helps Prevent Alzheimers

Cognitive decline is a problem commonly associated with aging. As people get older, they can become forgetful and confused. Much research correlates exercise with a decrease in cognitive decline and serious conditions such as Alzheimer's disease. However, a new study performed helps to clarify how and why exercise helps cognitive function in people as they age.

Researchers compared two groups of healthy adults aged 60 to 76 years. The first group reported exercising three or more hours per week for the past decade while the other group exercised less than one hour per week. The members of the more active group had more blood flow to the brain, which leads to enhanced brain activity.

Are you following the Guidelines?

If you've been lax about your exercise routine and aren't sure what you should be doing?  New recommendations give adults and kids specifics on what they can do to reap important health benefits.

Adults need a minimum of 2 1/2 hours of moderate exercise per week, or one hour and 15 minutes of vigorous activity. And kids should get an hour of activity per day, according to the Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans.

Those are the numbers the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services came up with after a two-year process that included having a 13-member advisory committee review scientific research on the effects of physical activity and health.

Reduce Stress?

"The American Institute of Stress characterizes stress as "America's #1 health problem" and associates it with a host of diseases. Practices such as yoga have been used worldwide for thousands of years to increase relaxation and manage stress. A recent study conducted at Massachusetts General Hospital sheds some light on how stress-reducing activities can actually help fight disease. These activities trigger what is known as the relaxation response, which is characterized by decreased oxygen consumption and reduced psychological distress."

Trouble Sleeping?

Having trouble sleeping? Give aerobics a try!
According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 64 million Americans suffer from insomnia. While there are varying types of insomnia and a myriad of causes, all insomniacs suffer from the same persistent inability to fall asleep. Treatment of this condition can include medication, therapy, relaxation exercises, and, according to a new study, aerobic exercise.

Researchers in Brazil recently studied a group of 28 women and 8 men suffering from chronic insomnia. Participants were divided into four groups: moderate aerobic exercise, heavy aerobic exercise, strength training, and a control group. The results indicated that the moderate aerobic exercise group saw the greatest improvement, with a 54 percent decrease in sleep onset latency, 36 percent decrease in awake time, an increase in total sleep time and sleep efficiency by 21 percent and 18 percent, respectively and a 7 percent decrease in anxiety.

Pilates for Tennis Players

Benefits of Pilates for Tennis

South Beach Fitness proudly offers the Peak Pilates method of Pilates training...

For those of you who play tennis, it is no secret that tennis requires agility, stamina, and endurance. Pilates improves your body’s balance for quick reaction to directional changes, improves power of your stroke by increasing the strength of your core (powerhouse), improves muscular control, increases upper and lower body strength, and increases overall flexibility. Furthermore, it produces higher levels of concentration and strengthens and balances the body to prevent injury. Let’s take a closer look at these two benefits. Pilates Improves Concentration. Just like tennis, Pilates requires that you concentrate for a period of time. Pilates sessions are usually 50 to 55 minutes, which require you to concentrate on how to execute a specific movement. You are focusing on what is moving, which muscles you are using, and the quality of the movement. This obviously, requires concentration and a connection between the mind and the body. This in turn, will increase your levels of mental concentration on the court. Pilates Prevents Injury. Tennis players often develop muscular imbalances between their dominant and non-dominant side. A well-designed Pilates program will help the body attain muscular balance both posterior / anterior and also bilaterally. The following are some examples of exercises to target each of these areas.
Shoulders
: In order to address the anterior and posterior balances of the shoulder, it is important to keep the external rotators strong. This will increase the power behind the forehand and backhand strokes. Time to hit the courts,Sonia Rodriguez, Peak Pilates Master Trainer
